About us

Reading Borough Council is a small but urban local authority based on Berkshire.  From the 2011 census it recorded a population of 155,700.  Reading is a very affluent area with a number of large companies based in the area and good transport links to the City.

As a landlord Reading Borough Council owns approx. 7,000 homes, with a further approx. 2,000 being owned by our Registered Providers.  Only approx. 400 properties become available each financial year.  Our accommodation is located across the borough however mainly in the Whitley, Southcote and Tilehurst areas.

We allocate all of our vacant properties in line with our Allocations Scheme which you can view here.

By assessing applications in this way it ensures that we are consistent with our approach of assessing housing need in the borough and ensuring that those with the highest priority are housed first.  Social housing is not obtainable for all of those registered, which as at December 2023 was 4,000 applicants.
